NISO confirms grid collapse, begins nationwide restoration.

Nigeria’s power sector on Wednesday suffered its third grid collapse of 2025, as electricity generation crashed from 2,917.83MW to just 1.5MW around 11am.

This latest collapse plunged about 30 states into darkness, cutting supply to all 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos).

Data obtained by Advisors Reports from the Independent System Operator (ISO) showed that the generation nosedived from 2,917.83MW to just 1.5MW between 11:00 am and 12:00 pm.

Confirming the incident, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) said the disturbance occurred at 11:20 am after the tripping of a power generating company (GenCo), which cascaded across others and triggered the system collapse.

NISO explained that restoration began at 11:45 am, starting with the resupply of Abuja from Shiroro Power Plant, and noted that substantial recovery had since been achieved nationwide.

Checks by Advisors Reports revealed that the first grid collapse in 2025 occurred on January 11, the second on February 12, and the latest incident now raises fresh concerns over the state of power infrastructure in the country.

NISO assured that a full investigation is ongoing to determine both the immediate and remote causes of the collapse, adding that the findings will inform remedial and proactive actions to prevent future occurrences.
