Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has sworn in Engr. Abimbola Odubiyi as Chairman/Non-Executive Member, along with four other members, of the newly constituted Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC).

This was the highlight of the swearing-in of the Chairman and Members of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC), held at the Lagos House, Ikeja, on Monday.

Governor Sanwo-Olu charged the appointees to uphold the highest standards of transparency, integrity, and professionalism in delivering on their mandates.

The newly inaugurated members of LASERC include Mr. Tunde Gbajumo (Non-Executive Member), Dr. Fouad Animasahun (Executive Member/CEO), Barr. Kofoworola Olokun-Olawoyin (Executive Member), and Engr. Oluwaseun Fadare (Executive Member), alongside Engr. Abimbola Odubiyi, who was sworn in as Chairman/Non-Executive Member.

Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to supporting the Commission with the necessary resources, describing LASERC as critical to the implementation of the THEMES+ development agenda, which prioritises innovation, good governance, and inclusive growth.

He noted that the establishment of LASERC represents a historic turning point in Lagos State’s energy sector, following the enactment of the Lagos Electricity Bill 2024 and the official transfer of regulatory authority from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the State.

According to the Governor, LASERC is tasked with ensuring affordable, reliable, and sustainable electricity tailored to the peculiar needs of Lagos, including tariff regulation, enforcement of technical standards, promotion of renewable energy, curbing electricity theft, and extending power to underserved areas.

He added that the restructuring of Eko Electricity Distribution Plc and Ikeja Electric Plc to form subsidiaries licensed by LASERC would strengthen service delivery and responsiveness to local needs.

Speaking at the ceremony, Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, said the appointments were driven by ongoing reforms in the state’s power sector, aimed at significantly improving electricity generation and distribution across Lagos.

Advisors Reports gathered that the Commission, with this development is expected to oversee the restructuring of local electricity distribution companies, such as Eko Electricity Distribution Plc and Ikeja Electric, requiring them to form subsidiaries licensed by LASERC to enhance local responsiveness and service delivery.
