… says manufacturing sector struggling due to power supply crises

George Onafowokan, Managing Director of Coleman Wires and Cables, has called on Chief Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power, to take urgent steps toward replacing outdated cables that have exceeded their shelf life, citing them as a major factor contributing to the frequent collapses of the national grid.

Speaking in response to recent grid failures, Onafowokan emphasized the need for immediate infrastructure upgrades to enhance efficiency across the power distribution network.

He explained that many of the cables currently used to evacuate electricity from power generation companies (GenCos) through the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to distribution companies (DisCos) are no longer fit for purpose.

The deterioration of these cables, he noted, has led to recurring system failures that have severely impacted manufacturers and the broader economy.

Onafowokan highlighted that companies like Coleman Wires and Cables, along with other manufacturers, have resorted to self-generated power to sustain operations.

However, the rising cost of diesel has worsened the situation, making it increasingly difficult for businesses to remain viable.

“Manufacturing costs are skyrocketing due to energy expenses, and many companies are struggling to stay afloat,” he stated.

He urged the Minister of Power to adopt a long-term strategic plan, prioritizing both the modernization of critical infrastructure and the promotion of localized power generation.

Advocating for the establishment of industrial power clusters, Onafowokan suggested that industries could collaborate to generate and share electricity within specific areas, ensuring more stable power access at lower costs.

Onafowokan warned that the persistent grid collapses and power outages are disrupting production schedules, driving up operational costs, and delaying output, further straining Nigeria’s manufacturing sector.

He stressed that resolving these challenges is essential for improving industrial productivity and revitalizing the economy.
