… reconstitutes leadership of the Commission

Oredola Adeola

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reconstitution of the leadership of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), appointing Dr. Musiliu Oseni as Chairman, following the Senate’s confirmation of board members on December 16.

As authoritatively reported by Advisors Reports more than a week ago, the appointment was confirmed in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, and obtained by Advisors Reports on Thursday.

Dr. Oseni, who joined the Commission as a Commissioner in January 2017 and later served as Vice Chairman, takes over as Chairman with effect from December 1, 2025.

His tenure will run until the completion of his statutory 10-year term at the Commission, in line with the provisions of the Electricity Act, 2023.

According to the statement, Dr. Yusuf Ali was confirmed as Vice Chairman of the Commission. Dr. Ali was first appointed as a Commissioner in February 2022.

His designation as Vice Chairman also took effect from December 1, 2025, and will last until the completion of his first term.

Other members of the reconstituted NERC Board include Mr. Nathan Rogers Shatti, Commissioner, who is serving a second term, having first been appointed in January 2017.

Mr. Dafe Akpeneye, Commissioner, who is also on a second term, following his initial appointment in January 2017.

Aisha Kanti-Bello, Commissioner, is serving her second term, having been first appointed in December 2020.

Dr. Chidi Ike, Commissioner, is a serving his first term, following his appointment in February 2022.

Dr. Fouad Animashaun, Commissioner, who begins his first term effective December 2025.

He is an energy economist with extensive experience in Nigeria’s power sector and most recently served as Executive Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

President Tinubu, in the statement, charged the newly constituted board to deepen and consolidate the ongoing transformation of Nigeria’s power sector, in strict alignment with the letter and spirit of the Electricity Act, 2023.

The development effectively puts to rest the controversial nomination of Engr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat, a former local government chairman, whose earlier nomination as head of the Commission had drawn widespread backlash from industry stakeholders.
