President Tinubu drops Ramat, nominates Musiliu Oseni as substantive NERC Chairman

… asks Senate to confirm Aisha Mahmud for second term

Oredola Adeola

President Bola Tinubu has reportedly nominated Musiliu Oseni, Vice Chairman and Commissioner for Economic Regulations at the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), as the substantive Chairman of the Commission, pending Senate ratification.

Advisors Reports confirmed the nomination through a credible State House source, who requested anonymity, noting that the official announcement is expected imminently.

Oseni is consequently expected to assume the role in a substantive capacity.

The development effectively ends the controversy surrounding the earlier nomination of Engr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat, a former Local Government Chairman, as head of the Commission.

Earlier on Tuesday, the President also withdrew the nomination of Abubakar Yusuf as Commissioner for Consumer Affairs and, in a fresh request to the Senate, nominated Aisha Mahmoud for a second term.

The President informed the Senate that the latest updates supersede his earlier submission conveyed in a letter dated August 6, 2025.

Meanwhile, in the new communication seeking confirmation, President Tinubu retained the nomination of Dr. Faud Olayinka Animashaun as Commissioner for Finance and Management Services at the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The letter addressed to the upper chamber was read during Tuesday’s plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

In the correspondence, Tinubu cited Section 35 (1) and (3) of the Electricity Act 2023 as the legal basis for the nominations, noting that the appointments were being forwarded for legislative approval in line with statutory requirements.

The letter read: “Distinguished Senate President, Request for Confirmation of Appointment of Commissioners for the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

In accordance with the provisions of Section 35 subsections 1 and 3 of the Electricity Act 2023, I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of the following two persons as Commissioners in the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.”

Tinubu further emphasized that the new request “supersedes my earlier submission via a letter dated 6th August 2025.”

He urged the Senate to expedite consideration and confirmation of the nominees, conveying his highest regard to the Senate President and distinguished senators.
