NERC to review mini-grid regulations to boost renewable energy integration

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has revealed the plans to review mini-grid regulations to accelerate the adoption and expansion of renewable and distributed energy solutions in the country’s electricity grid system.
This was the highlight at the end of the two-day Summit On Accelerating Scale-Up of Renewable and Distributed Energy Resources in Nigeria which ended on Tuesday, organised by NERC.
Dr. Musiliu Oseni, Vice Chairman of NERC, in his opening remarks, expressed the belief that renewable energy will be accelerated to promote the expansion of the national electricity grid.
Dr. Oseni stated that participants’ in-depth engagement at the Summit would significantly impact the renewable energy expansion drive in Nigeria.
He explained that the contributions will help to build the policy and the regulatory framework to achieve NERC’s objective of having more renewable energy integrated into the Nigerian electricity system.
Abba Terab, NERC Deputy General Manager, in his remark, explained that the summit was a learning curve for NERC and the electricity Distribution Companies(DisCos).
“This is the beginning of more collaborations for those present here to see that we deliver renewable energy and distributed energy in the power system.
“NERC will take note of all the feedback and requests, especially on the mini-grid regulations, and provide feedback.
“NERC will also work on the relevant regulations in line with the business rule and come up with the reviewed regulations,” he said.
Dr. Yusuf Ali, NERC Commissioner, Planning, Research and Strategy, on behalf of the NERC Chairman explained that all the participants, donor agencies, and the regulator have been able to learn a lot from the renewable energy field.
“We make regulations to be beneficial with issues of priority. The most important thing that has happened during the Summit is networking, which this summit has presented just as potential opportunities have been showcased.
“Everybody deserves a round of applause, and we look forward to further engagement,” concluded Dr. Ali.
Advisors Reports gathered that the Summit got commitments from participants to push for the scale-up of renewable and distributed energy.
