… accumulates over 45m man-hours between 2021- 2024 without any LTI

The Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) Train 7 gas project, with a total contract sum of $4.3 billion, began construction in June 2021 and has achieved 67% completion as of 2024, having advanced from 30% completion in 2022 and 52% in 2023, accumulating over 45 million man-hours without any Lost Time Injury (LTI).

In a recent statement released by Andy Odeh, NLNG, General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, and obtained by Advisors Reports, the company provided information and clarifications in respect of the Train 7 project to the Senate and House of Representatives’ Joint Committee on Gas (the Committee).

The company highlighted the project’s impact, noting that over 9,000 Nigerians are employed on Bonny Island, with numerous indirect jobs and businesses benefiting from the construction activities.

NLNG emphasized that the Train 7 project is crucial for diversifying the country’s revenue sources, generating income during the Energy Transition, and helping Nigeria achieve a net-zero future.

The company stated that the project is key to monetizing Nigeria’s extensive gas reserves, estimated at over 200 trillion cubic feet (tcf), and serves as a model for other gas development initiatives in the country.

It also added that the Train 7 project aligns with the Federal Government’s Decade of Gas initiative, reinforcing Nigeria’s gas development goals as the world moves towards a net-zero future.

Advisors Reports’ check showed that the Train 7 project, delayed for over a decade before construction began in 2021, will add a seventh LNG processing unit with a 4.2 Mtpa capacity.

Supporting infrastructure according to the available data includes an 84,200m³ storage tank, a 36,000m³ condensate tank, and three gas turbine generators.

This expansion is expected to increase the Nigeria LNG Terminal’s production capacity by 35%, from 22 Mtpa to 30 Mtpa.

As the NLNG Train 7 project construction momentum is sustained, the company has urged all stakeholders, including the Federal Government and well-meaning Nigerians, to support the preservation of an enabling environment for its successful completion and the attraction of more transformational projects to Nigeria.

Project Timeline

2018:

• July: NLNG awarded the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract for Train 7 to two consortia: B7 JV Consortium and SCD JV Consortium. Guaranty Trust Bank of Nigeria and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. (SMBC) were appointed as financial advisers.

2019:

• March: NLNG and the Nigerian Content Development Monitoring Board (NCDMB) approved the Nigeria Content (NC) plan for the Train 7 Project.
• September: NLNG issued a Letter of Intent for the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract to SCD JV Consortium.
• December: NLNG’s shareholders made the Final Investment Decision (FID) in Abuja.

2020:

• April: NCDMB approved the Nigerian Content Compliance Certificate (NCCC) and Approved Vendors Lists (AVLs).
• May: NLNG awarded the EPC contracts for Train 7 to SCD JV Consortium.

2021:

• June: President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated the construction of Train 7 in Bonny Island.
• August: SCD JV Consortium appointed Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. to provide the main cryogenic heat exchangers (MCHEs) for the project.

2022:

• August: The project reached 30% completion.

2023:

• The project reached 52% completion.

2024:

• The project reached 67% completion, with over 45 million man-hours logged without any Lost Time Injury (LTI) since construction started.
